Is It Really Intelligent?
The Boom of AI and Its Impact on Occupational Health & Safety
Artificial Intelligence is creating the fastest transformation humanity has ever witnessed. But is it truly "intelligent"? Or is it just "Google Part 2" β a glorified search tool with a bigger library?
People see AI differently. Some believe AI is simply a large database that fetches information more precisely than search engines. Others β scientists, engineers, philosophers β argue that AI represents a completely new dimension, a turning point in human history.
"Historian Yuval Noah Harari describes AI as one of the four most significant events in human evolution β comparable to the rise of Homo sapiens and the steam engine."
He predicts it will reshape human generations, redefine economies, reorganize political structures, and even touch two of humanity's deepest desires: longevity and immortality.
But What Exactly Is This Thing We Call "AI"?
And does it really have the potential to change the entire journey of human history?
The Data Behind Today's AI
Elon Musk once mentioned that AI models like Grok β and most major chatbots β are trained on an unimaginable quantity of data. The exact numbers vary, but the scale is beyond anything humans can comprehend.
AI models process information at speeds no biological brain can achieve. Some estimates suggest they can read the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of books per hour β a volume a human would take more than a lifetime to absorb.
In terms of raw knowledge, the comparison between AI and humans isn't even close.
But is knowledge the same as intelligence?
"AI Isn't Intelligent" β A Different Perspective
Sir Roger Penrose; famous mathematician, philosopher of science and Nobel Laureate in Physics argues that AI does not qualify as "intelligent" in the human sense.
Penrose argues:
- A four-year-old child absorbs more real-world sensory data than all the data AI has been trained on.
- Intelligence without consciousness is incomplete.
- Humans possess qualities machines do not: intuition, abstract thinking, spontaneous creativity, and the ability to generate new ideas from nothing.
Einstein famously said he intuited the relationship between space and time before he could mathematically prove it. Humans can imagine beyond the data they have. AI cannot β not yet.
AI relies on the data it is fed.
Humans can create data simply by thinking.
That is our superpower.

Discover how AI can handle the heavy lifting while you make the big decisions
Start Free Today βHumans Still Hold the Strongest Advantage β For Now
When humans receive information, we don't just store it. We process it. We create mind maps. We reject things that violate common sense.
If you saw a man levitating, defying gravity β your brain would instantly tell you: "This is not possible." Humans filter reality. AI doesn't naturally have this boundary.
So today's AI cannot take away roles involving:
- Creativity
- Intuition
- Abstract problem-solving
- Contextual human judgement
- Complex decision-making
- Maintenance, repair, dynamic hazard control
- Real-world problem-solving in unpredictable environments
This means:
- No β current AI will not create fully autonomous construction sites.
- No β warehouses won't run without any human oversight.
- No β transportation will not be 100% human-free in the near future.
We are safe β for now.
Amazon's automation shows the direction, though. Tens of thousands have already been laid off due to increased AI and robotics adoption. This is only a small percentage of their workforce, but it signals a growing trend.
Still, this is not the end of humans.
The AGI Question β When Machines Become Creative
AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is the next frontier β the kind of AI that can think, reason, innovate, and create the way humans do.
When asked what AGI would think of his work at SpaceX, Elon Musk laughed and said:
"They will say, 'Good job, monkeys.'"
It's a joke, but it reflects a serious concern: If AGI surpasses human creativity, if AGI solves problems humans can't, if AGI becomes capable of replacing every job⦠What happens to humanity?
Will AGI ever reach that level? Nobody knows, but the debate continues.
Bill Gates offers another perspective:
"Humans were not designed for a 9β6 job. They might finally be happy when freed from the financial economy."
Maybe AGI will not destroy human purpose. Maybe it will redefine it.
But Until AGI Pays Our Salaries⦠We Still Have to Work
Until the day AGI becomes powerful enough to say:
"You stay home and live your life β
I'll send money to your bank account every month."
We must continue working β and if we work, we must stay:
- Safe, and
- Healthy
Not just safe from accidents, but protected from:
- Work-related stress
- Mental health decline
- Physical strain
- Poor ergonomics
- Occupational diseases
- Unsafe environments
- Excessive workload
Every employer has a responsibility to protect:
Employees
Contractors
Suppliers
Visitors
Pedestrians
Neighbours
Safety + Health = Real OHS
AI + Human Intelligence: A Powerful Combination for OHS
We shouldn't reject AI simply because humans are "more intelligent."
AI has massive capacity
- Memory
- Speed
- Processing
Humans have unmatched ability
- Judgement
- Intuition

Together, this creates something powerful.
Imagine a human who:
- Knows everything happening globally
- Remembers the entire history of humanity
- Has read every book
- Has watched every video
- Understands every law
- Never forgets anything
